if you've not heard about Alabama Chanin- sit down suga! Natalie Chanin is an original- and You know I love originals. She has a honest to goodness Unique fashion label Alabama Chanin that uses the natural resources of skilled hands and the most exquisitely nimble fingers in Alabama.
The designs of Chanin can be for the home or the body. I find her made by hand clothing to be reminiscent of a few special-mostly simple things my great great grandmother made-and somehow- were saved, even after a fire destroyed the attics and other parts of the old Victorian. There were tiny delicate stitches of cotton thread on real natural fabric-cotton, linen.

The Alabama Chanin fabrics are all natural-organic, recycled or new, all combined to become works of art -like the applique on organic cotton jersey above (here).Natalie Chanin's artisans are her neighbors in and around Florence Alabama and there work can be one of a kind or limited editions- "Grown to Sewn"

Sargent painted this double portrait in 1897. Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes (1867–1944), the son of Mr. and Mrs. Anson Phelps Stokes (see 65.252), was then an architect and author. His wife, Edith Minturn Stokes (1867–1937), was born in West Brighton, Staten Island, a daughter of the heir to a shipping fortune. The Stokes were married on August 25, 1895, and the portrait by Sargent was a wedding gift from James A. Scrimser. Sargent's first intention was to paint a single portrait of Edith during the summer of 1897 in Venice. After numerous posing and preparatory sessions, the artist decided to paint her as if she were just returning from a brisk walk outdoors, with a greyhound at her side. After the portrait was finished, however, the greyhound was no longer available and I. N. Phelps Stokes suggested that he take its place. the GIBSON GIRL, I suppose this may have been one of the first feminine images I saw as a child. There were a few framed GIRLS in my little bedroom (which was darling by the way). IRENE LANGHORNE was THE GIRL. She married Charles Dana Gibson, and so inspired by her beauty, Gibson began to paint his love and she sold! The images of the Gibson Girls are truly Iconic. there were other Gibson Girls-but Irene was the Original.
