OS X is Unix, it is not Unix-like much like Linux.
It is the real deal, Unix '03 certified and all. The BSD userland qualifies as genuine Unix and the kernel provides the entire required POSIX syscall interfaces to pass the certification tests :

So yes, in a sense, OS X is built on top of Unix, NeXT's implementation of it which happens to use a Berkeley userland and a Carnegie made Mach kernel.

.....About the the mentality of the people who buy a two year old phone just so they can say they have an iPhone.
Actually it is because a 2 year old iPhone is better than any Android device out there.
We all know the iPhone 4 is streets ahead of any other smartphone, but the 3GS provides a superior experience as well. It is not about spec sheets, it is about performance, software, reliability and the rest.
I agree with others that it is very telling that the 3GS outsells every single android iPhone on the market. That tells me people just buy random Androids when they go to buy a phone because they are cheaper or on deal, or if they don't have a choice to get an iPhone.
It is not like the general consumer is going "Wow this HTC magicamalcallit is so awesome. I tell all my friends to get it." or "This Samsung Soslightynotasbad is really an awesome phone and people are eating them up."
They might as well not even put labels on android phones. They are essentially a commodity compromised of a big pile of iPhone copycats with an inferior ecosystem. It almost seems like Cell Phone stores require people buying android devices to do so blindfolded.

The dates are wrong as the F700 was unveiled after Apple announced the iPhone at MacWorld in 2007
It was Released a month after macworld 07, it takes far longer then a month to copy a design and put it into mass production. Apple is in the wrong on this one. Samsung can easily say it is continuing its original design and mixing it with android.

I for one think the Apple experience with iPhone 3GS which is still being sold at retail, will encourage them to privately have iPhone 4 have a 3 year product life.
What was so special about the 3GS's experience for Apple ? The iPhone 3G was sold at retail until mid-2010, just like the 3GS is still sold now in 2011.
This is just their motus operandi, last gen iPhone for 99$ in a 8GB format. If anything, the 3GS followed the same path as the 3G up to now and one would expect a 8 GB iPhone 4 to surface once they ship the iPhone 5.

After researching, I discovered that chocolate milk has the same carb to protein ratio that expensive recovery drink mixes have (such as the P90X Recovery Drink). So, instead of spending around $60/month, I've elected to go with the chocolate milk, and to add a few supplements that are important for muscle recovery (which are found in those expensive drinks). Any excuse to drink chocolate milk is a good one.

Ever since the iPhone came out I've said that it will eventually replace the iPod. That day may be coming sooner than we guessed.
Someday the iPhone will be just like the iPad. There's no 'iPod Touch,' just an 'iPhone' that you buy with or without a 3G or 4G chip. And it's up to you if you want to buy service to go along with it or not. (They could still call it the 'iPhone.' The chip-less one would come with a booklet telling you about Skype and Viber and other wifi phone services.)
Such a device would naturally go on sale before the holiday season, so maybe we're close to that happening. I don't think it'll be this year, but maybe they're getting us ready for the year when it does happen.
Does it really have to be one or the other, why can't both products exist happily.

With that in mind it makes sense for them to be released at the same time. As for the other iPods they do exactly what you expect from a music player, they play music. NO one uses iChat because no one uses AIM. Its all crappy MSN!
I use iChat with a Jabber ID to chat to my MSN buddies. I don't tend to send them files or audio chat with them so it's fine for just text.

I'm excited about the update. I plan on getting a new iMac shortly after OS X Lion comes out.
I'm really hoping for an inexpensive SSD primary drive and 2TB secondary "spinning" drive.
A solid video card would be nice, but I really don't game that much, so that's not a deal killer.
I expect this may be the last of the classic 2005-style (L bracket, screen with "chin") iMacs produced. In 12-18 months I expect Apple will launch a new style of iMac with no "chin" and a drafting table style multi-touch screen.
Think iPad 2 with the "L" shape stand as the new iMac. Ditch the Optical Drive, not needed anymore considering its takes up space and is hardly ever used by the majority. :)

Crashes these days are pretty rare, and are usually caused by attempts to access strange areas of memory, or driver problems. I have an XP box running a couple of web containers, and a few app servers; aside from a driver hiccup, never had a crash or secret reboot (and I would know, because I would still need to log back in when I got back from the water cooler).

Wisely my other half suggested at $75 limit for Christmas. :) Forces us to listen to each other and think more about what might be a surprise, and a thoughtful gift. This is our first Christmas together.
So it has been fun in teasing with things that we have been finding. Though I get a pass since it is also their birthday month I think. LOL

This use of 'real' materials in digitial software is something I really detest. It made me not like the ipad and nearly put me off the iphone.

ical - as we have seen
Game center - fake felt table
All these interfaces are the worst thing about iosx .
It seems they are going to get worse !!!!!!! i bet it will be paper for mail next.
