Claire Hamill - Voices

Hamill was a 70s Joni Mitchell-style folk singer before going New Age in the 80s. Voices is an a-cappella record, with lots of overdubs and trippy, pretty chorusy loop parts.  It's kind of a proto-Panda Bear record. Here's the deal with the Panda Bear record, in case you were curious: it's innovative enough that you can go back through old music and find proto examples of it. Hamill is definitely squarely in that camp - you could invite Voices to a party with Panda Bear, Seefeel, The Field and Cocteau Twins and it wouldn't get awkward. It also has a nice 80s kind of artificial-vocal recording style.

"Afternoon in a Wheatfield" is my favorite, because of the first opening heavenly wordless singing loops. If for example you were out last night at some sparse rooftop party with a ska band doing Billy Joel covers (would there be a better metaphor for the melancholic conclusion of summer, than a half-empty roof and a ska billy joel cover band?), and you and your friends spent a fair amount of time assisting in keg drainage such that you got home at 4am, I might recommend gently fading "Afternoon in a Wheatfield" slowly in as your eyes flutter groggily open the next morning.

If I were so inclined I could teach a little class: take Wheatfield's opening bars, add some serious delay- instant The Field.

if you're so inclined, here's the full jam. It is New Age, I won't lie. But it's so ripe for sampling and being enjoyed in a convalescent state.
